Mika Piirainen – Spring/Summer 2010

The beautifully cut clothes of Mika Piirainen tell stories of nature with their patterns. Metso is an enlargement of Maija Isola’s Koppelo pattern, which is part of the bird series she created in 1961. The wavy fabrics Lorina and Lirinä (1972) designed by Pentti Rinta are evocative of summery waters. By contrast, Keisarin puutarhassa (1966) by Kaarina Kellomäki is a graphic floral pattern: a garden from a wasp’s-eye view. In the two-tone Lanketti (1965) designed by Annika Rimala, Mika Piirainen sees the lacy-edged parasols.
