Care instructions for Marimekko products
- Follow the instructions on the care label for recommended wash temperature
- For coloured articles, we recommend a detergent that does not contain any bleach or brightening agents
- Soaking is not recommended, as it may cause excess dye to bleed onto light areas of fabric
- Colours may bleed when exposed to rain
- Sunlight fades colours
Printed fabrics
100% cotton or linen
The fabrics should be washed separately in plenty of water the first few times to remove any excess dye that may have remained on the fabric surface. We recommend washing before sewing, because cotton and linen fabrics always shrink in the first wash. Fabrics with metallic printing (such as gold and silver prints) should be washed at 40°C (104°F) and in plenty of water. We don’t recommend dry clean to ensure that the prints retain their original appearance. Fabrics with metallic prints should be ironed on the reverse side.

PVC-coated fabrics
100% cotton PVC- coated
The easy-care PVC-coated fabrics are intended for indoor use. As we want our products to be as environmentally safe as possible, we have started to use only wax chemicals soluble in water. Please, remember to wipe off strong-coloured stains (such as carrot, tomato, berries, ink, sauces) immediately to prevent the stain from adhering to the porous coating. If the reverse side of the fabric becomes soiled, we recommend machine wash. Avoid using fast spin cycle. Do not soak, because printed colours may bleed. Please, remember that continuous maschine-wash weakens the waxing, as water-soluable wax dissolves somewhat in washing. The fabric can be steam ironed on the reverse side.

Terry-cloth products
100 % cotton
The terry-cloth products should be washed with similar colours. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when loading your washing machine to prevent the formation of lint. Do not use a water-saving programme and always spin dry. We recommend washing all white-striped articles with light colours, so that the white stripes will retain their brightness. The use of fabric softener increases the linting of terry and reduces the absorbency of terry cloth. Our products are manufactured from natural cotton and can therefore never be
100 % shrink-resistant. To avoid pulled threads, never wash towelling products together with clothing that has hooks or zips. Simply cut off pulled loops, never pull them out.

Cotton jerseys
100 % cotton
The jerseys should be washed separately the first time; thereafter, they can be washed with similar colours. We recommend washing all white-striped articles with light colours, so that the white stripes will retain their freshness. The jerseys will shrink 3–6% in the first wash; tumble drying causes additional shrinkage. Washing the garments inside out at the recommended temperature will help to keep the colours bright longer.

Printed clothes
100 % cotton
The clothes made from printed fabric should be washed separately in plenty of water the first few times to remove any excess dye that may have remained on the fabric surface. The fabric clothes will shrink 0-4 % in the first wash; tumble drying causes additional shrinkage. Washing the garments inside out at the recommended temperature will help to keep the colours bright longer.

Canvas bags
100 % cotton
Marimekko's classic bags are made of heavyweight canvas. Hand wash is recommended because of the bags' structure. Bags with printed patterns can be washed at 60°C (140°F) using the gentle spin cycle. The canvas bags have a Teflon finish which makes the fabric soil and water repellent. The finish lasts through about six washings.
Bedding
Cotton
100 % cotton
The printed cotton bed linen should be washed separately in plenty of water the first few times to remove any excess dye that may have remained on the fabric surface. Dimensional changes, not exceeding –5%, may occur in the first wash.

Linen
100% linen
New linen bedding initially sheds lint, which is characteristic of linen. The use of fabric softener increases linting. Linen shrinks in the first wash more than cotton, and tumble drying causes additional shrinkage. Avoid using the fast spin cycle. Mangling or ironing restores the beautiful lustre of linen.

Upholstery fabrics
100% cotton canvas
To maintain the colours, we recommend washing the fabrics at 60°C (140°F). Washing at a lower temperature can cause the colours to bleed. Do not rub stains, as this may fade the colours. The upholstery fabrics have been treated with a stain-repellent finish. The finish lasts through about ten washings.
